The Falabella is a miniature horse that stands no higher than 34 inches. This
extraordinary breed is produced at Senor Falabella’s ranch in Argentina and they
have been in existence since the 19th century after an Irishman discovered
the breed.
He noticed that they had a small stallion which appeared to have ‘Dwarf
sickness’. Newton was fascinated. He kept it and bred horses from it for his
daughter. The Falabella is not a small pony but a miniature horse. It is
proportioned like a horse, with a fine bone and small feet.
It cannot be ridden and cannot be compared with that other small breed,
the Shetland. Falabellas are delicate and must be looked after like
thoroughbreds. They need to be blanketed when it is cold and fed
concentrates, such as oats.
