DID YOU KNOW?

The sap from many plants, most of them trees, is useful to people too and was even more important in the past. Real rubber and real chewing gum are made from the sap of two tropical trees - but nowadays most chewing gum is artificial.

Frankincense and Myrrh, two of the gifts brought to baby Jesus in Bethlehem by the Three Wise Men, are tree gums.

Tree gums are still used in processed foods and by dentists to fill holes in teeth.

Real maple syrup is still made by boiling the sap of maple trees in Canada and the United States and in parts of eastern Europe people make beer or wine out of the sap of birch trees.

Amber is a precious stone used to make jewellery. Its actually the fossilized gum from prehistoric trees. Sometimes insects were trapped in the gum and this makes the amber even more valuable from a monetary or archaeological point of view. In the movie Jurassic Park, amber preserved prehistoric DNA which allowed scientists to bring the dinosaurs back to life!
