Day 2: 29th January 2009

The Birches have stopped flowing sap! This means that the theory of the sap
in birches not travelling all the way down to the roots is more than likely true.
This also means we haven’t  missed the Rising Day for the Birches which is
       good news.

We measured out the amounts of sap from each tree:

       NAME:                      AMOUNT:                      COLOUR:
Birch 1, Jug 1           247 ml                           Light Yellow
       Birch 1, Jug 2           162 ml                           Orange

Birch 2                      203 ml                          Light Yellow
Birch 3                         3 ml                           Light Yellow

           Silver Birch Tree

                Birch Leaf.

The sap flow in Birch 3 was much smaller, most of it not even making it down
the pipe into the jug, but there was still some definite flow. Lack of flow could
be because of Birch 3 being smaller than 1&2, we drilled almost to the top of
the sap line in this particular tree, or because it is on peat soil, or some mixture
of the three. The significant change in colour in Birch 1 Jug 2 is strange also.
We wont draw any more conclusions about these things until after Rising Day.

We will keep checking the jugs twice daily and give an update when something
       new happens.
